Dish on 'Mamma Mia 3' – Sabrina Carpenter to Join the Cast?

New chatter about "Mamma Mia 3" hints at Meryl Streep's return and teases a possible new addition to the cast: Sabrina Carpenter.

"'Mamma Mia!' franchise producer Judy Craymer told Deadline in an interview published Wednesday, May 28 that she could envision pop star Carpenter, 26, playing a role in an in-the-works third movie," People Magazine reported.

The franchise consists of two films (so far) based on a stage musical built around the catalogue of Swedish pop group ABBA. Deadline credited Craymer with shepherding the property to global stage and screen success, noting that "It's Craymer's drive and determination that has kept the 'Mamma Mia!' universe alive and kicking ever since it launched at London's Prince Edward Theatre on March 23,1999."

Craymer was coy about what role, exactly, the 26-year-old Carpenter might play. "She'd be a goddess," the producer said, "or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep."

As for the legendary star of the original film, Craymer "suggested that Streep, 75, would reprise her role as Donna, even though the character is depicted as dead in 2018's sequel 'Here We Go Again,'" People detailed.

Though Craymer talked up prospects for the franchise, no clear timeline for a new movie emerged. "It'll happen when it happens," the producer said, adding "that 'Mamma Mia 3' remains in development," People relayed.

The plot of the original 2008 film, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, revolved around the wedding of a young woman named Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), whose mother, Donna (Streep), had intimate relations with three different men before discovering she was pregnant – meaning that any of the three could have been Sophie's father. Looking to cover all bases, Sophie invites all three men, now decades older, to the wedding, slated to take place at the hotel Donna runs on a Greek island. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård played the three potential papas.

In the 2018 sequel, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again," directed by Ol Parker, the character of Donna has died, but Sophie is determined to renovate her late mother's hotel and re-open it. Flashbacks fill in details from Donna's youth – including the time she spent with Sophie's three possible fathers.

Craymer hinted that a script for the project might exist, but did not spill any story details. However, she pointed to excitement among the cast for a return to the franchise.

"Well, we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen," Craymer vowed, adding that "we brought together this amazing group of movie stars that were all connected through it and huge friendships evolved."

People noted that Carpenter is "known for covering ABBA songs at her concerts," and recalled the singer's name coming up in the past as a possible actor for the role of Sophie's daughter.
