Billionaire David Geffen Files for Divorce from Husband David Armstrong Just Shy of 2 Years with No Prenup

Entertainment mogul David Geffen filed for divorce from his husband of just shy of two years, TMZ reported on Friday. Geffen married David Armstrong, aka Donovan Michaels -- a name he used when he performed as a go-go dancer -- 1 year, 11 months ago.

It was also revealed that Geffen, 82, and Michaels, 32, did not have a prenup. While shocking on the surface, even without one, Geffen is safe from Michaels walking off with a portion of his enormous fortune. TMZ writes: "Geffen, who Forbes says is worth $8.7 BILLION, has amassed a fortune over the years, so it would seem Armstrong would be looking at a pile of cash. But Geffen has been retired for 15 years and has no income other than stocks and other equities, which are all separate property. Under California law, dividends from stocks that are separate property are also separate property, so it seems Armstrong won't get much, if anything, in the way of cash."

What Armstrong will get is spousal support, but only for 1 year. Under Cali law, the receiving spouse gets spousal support for 1/2 the length of the marriage. The amount of spousal support was not listed on the divorce document. Geffen says in the docs he will pay spousal support and attorney's fees.

Geffen has recruited renowned Los Angeles lawyer Laura Wasser to help the process along.

Armstrong reportedly met Geffen, the co-founder of the lucrative DreamWorks Records, in 2020 when he was assigned as his personal trainer. They married in a private Beverly Hills ceremony, the Daily Mail reported.

The New York Post did a deep dive into Armstrong's past at the time of the wedding and wrote that he "is a former go-go dancer with a murky past who has changed his name a number of times."

Sources told The Post that Michaels came from "very humble beginnings" and was one of 13 children in a family from Imlay City, Michigan, a town of just 4,000 people. A former friend recalled how Michaels was "super secretive" and rarely divulged his history.

Though born David Armstrong, he changed his name to Brandon Foster by the time he moved to Florida in 2014 and found employment at Miami's gay clubs, including "clothing optional" pool parties with other hot men.

"On a social media account from the time he frequently flaunted his toned physique in raunchy photos and in post from September 2014 said he was 'doing a little camming tonight," adding he would "put on a good show' for anyone who would pay to access his footage," writes the Post.

Armstrong has since removed content from both his IG and X accounts and hasn't posted on them in three years.

Around 2016-2017, Armstrong left Florida for New York City to pursue a modeling career. At this time he also changed his name to Donovan Michaels.

A fashion consultant and casting director who worked with Michaels on a 2016 shoot told the Post he was "a great model" but remembers after their initial gig, Michaels was passed over for subsequent modeling work.

"One thing I noticed was he was really into training and fitness, but as for modeling, I haven't seen him around in years ... and we work with a lot of different brands," said the source.

A former girlfriend who asked not to be identified said she only knew Michaels to date women.

The ex told the Post that Michaels was the type to always jump head-first into any adventure, and wasn't shocked by news of his nuptials.

"I wouldn't be surprised. I mean, he's very attractive," she said. "He would tell me people just assumed that he was into guys from what he posts on Instagram. I know that he was getting comments like that from gay men, that he was really attractive and in really good shape."

It's unclear how they met but a source told The Post that Michaels trained Geffen, who famously posted a picture of him and staff quarantining in 2020 on his $400 million mega yacht called the Rising Sun. Geffen later deleted the photo.

The Daily Mail writes that Geffen came out as gay in 1992 after years of being linked to a string of well-known women, including Cher.

At the time of the wedding two years ago, many took note of the 50-year age difference between Geffen and Armstrong. But in 2012, the mogul and philanthropist (69 at the time) broke off a six year relationship with 41-year year old Jeremy Lingvall. In 2012 the music mogul also dated 20-year-old former college football player Jamie Kuntz, and at one point filed a restraining order against him.

The Daily Mail adds that earlier in his career, Geffen founded Asylum Records, which signed musical sensations like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and the Eagles. He later founded Geffen records, which went on to release the work of artists including Elton John, Cher, Aerosmith, Blink-182, Guns N' Roses, and Nirvana. He also co-founded DreamWorks in the 1990s with Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg.
