Christopher Landon, the openly gay director of "Scream VII," posted his reaction to fan outrage after the film's star Melissa Barrera was fired following a social media post about the Israel-Hamas war: "Everything sucks. Stop yelling."
Barrera, the star of the last two installments in the franchise, was fired "by Spyglass Media over her social media repostings over the Israel-Hamas conflict," Deadline relayed.
The actor "reposted a series of Pro-Palestinian posts to her Instagram stories which were interpreted as being anti-Semitic by those close to the film production," Deadline went on to recount.
"This is my statement: 💔 Everything sucks," Landon wrote in a since-deleted post at X (formerly Twitter), Deadline reported.
"Stop yelling," the director went on to say. "This was not my decision to make."
The "yelling," however, has not subsided; Newsweek reports that Landon's "statement hasn't been good enough for people online, with many people calling it 'weak' and 'tone-deaf'."
"Christopher Landon's statement was so tone deaf my god," one X user posted in response, Newsweek noted.
"Absolutely no backbone if you see your lead actress being treated this way and you don't immediately show solidarity and drop the film."
Wrote another: "Deleting it pretty instantly too after being called out is extremely telling as well. Not even trying to add on and at least admit he should've said more or at least say he stands with Melissa. But instead just simply deleting it. It's so upsetting."
Wrote a third: "i'm sorry but christopher landon telling SCREAM fans to "stop yelling" on twitter shows that he had absolutely no idea what franchise was put into his hands anywayðŸ˜"
Others stuck up for Landon.
"Christopher Landon's tweet seems to have been written from an emotional place and I have a feeling there's more going on than just Melissa," one person posted.
Another noted: "directors don't actually hold that much power unless their names are nolan, scorsese, or tarantino".
The film company issued a statement of its own, Deadline noted, which read: "Spyglass' stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."
Barrera, who also starred in the film version of the musical "In the Heights," as well as the TV series "Vida" on Starz, had played "Sam Carpenter, sister of Jenna Ortega's Tara Carpenter" in the recent "Scream" movies, Deadline noted.
"Landon's directing credits include Blumhouse's 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,' 'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse,' the 'Happy Death Day' franchise and 'Freaky'," Deadline added.
