12 Movies to See at FilmOut San Diego
READ TIME: 14 MIN.
The FilmOut San Diego LGBTQ+ film festival will take place across four days, from Sept. 7-10, with in-person screenings of feature films, documentaries, and shorts scheduled to take place at The San Diego Natural History Museum (THE NAT) and The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA). Both venues are "located in San Diego's historic Balboa Park," according to a press a release from FilmOut.
"We will feature award-winning films from Sundance, SXSW and Berlin Film Festivals, along with independent features and a variety of short films," the release promises. "The Opening Night Film and Party will take place on Thursday, September 7, 2023 @ 7:00pm at THE NAT and our Closing Night Film will end the festival on Sunday, September 10, 2023 @ 7:15pm at MOPA with a Closing Night Dessert Reception after the film."
Centerpiece Films:
Jay Arnold's comedy "Shoulder Dance" will be this year's Men's Centerpiece. When two old friends reunite, the rekindling of their bond brings about unexpected opportunities for sexual and emotional connection.
Sacha Polack's "Silver Haze" will be the festival's Women's Centerpiece film. Franky (Vicky Knight) is consumed by a need for vengeance, until a new love – Florence (Esma Creed-Miles) – opens her eyes to different possibilities.
Andy Vallentine's "The Mattachine Family" takes the Festival Spotlight. A family drama that focuses on two foster dads – and the ways in which they respond to their foster child no longer being in their care when the boy's biological mother re-enters the picture – the film interrogates notions of family, fatherhood, and commitment as the men re-examine what they each want from life.
Going super-local, the festival presents its San Diego Spotlight Film, "INTERSECTIONAL LENS: The Black, Trans & Queer Experience." The hourlong documentary "explores the marginalized communities of those who are Black and identify as part of the San Diego LGBTQ+ community," the Film Out press release details.
Bill Oliver's "Our Son," starring Billy Porter and Luke Evans, is the U.S. Spotlight film. A longtime couple in the verge of divorce reckon with the idea of a midlife re-invention, while also taking care of their young son.
For International Spotlight, the fest features Florent Gouëlou's "Three Nights a Week," a drama that couldn't be timelier given the political attacks on the time-honored theatrical art of drag.
