Pumpkin obsession: it's not just for Linus anymore. October 26 is National Pumpkin Day.

There's no escaping pumpkins in October. On a culinary level, there are pumpkin cookies, pasta, cheesecake, oatmeal and even beer. Socially, there are pumpkin patches, carving contests and pumpkin chunkin' contests.

According to the National Day Calendar, the squash is native to North America. The oldest evidence of pumpkin-related seeds dates back to somewhere between 7000 and 5500 BC to seeds found in Mexico.

A 2,145-poundpumpkin from Streator, Illinois holds the current North American record. At 2,323-pounds, the giant pumpkin from Switzerland retains the world record prize.
