Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage

On September 8, 1966 a new concept television show was launched. New, because as a science fiction show it would be played seriously, not a cartoonish serial as the movies of the past had been, or Saturday morning adventures aimed at children. Creator Gene Roddenberry wanted his show to be a dramatic adventure in space, every week. And for three years and 79 episodes, "Star Trek" captured the imaginations of millions.

"Star Trek The Ultimate Voyage" is the 50th anniversary concert tour, launched this past January in Florida and arrived in Providence for one night only on Valentine's Day. Featuring a live full orchestra, the concert features Justin Freer as conductor, who is also the producer of several film music concerts performed around the globe. Featuring the Czech National Symphony, the production is rich with the sights and sounds of America's most enduring media franchise.

Clips highlighting the show's original format, plus the five additional shows based on the concept and all twelve feature films are included in the presentation. Narrated by "Star Trek: The Next Generation's" own Lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn,) whose rich baritone voice is perfect for the task, we are treated to the most iconic moments in the film and television series, there is much to draw on, but we aren't disappointed. Projected on a 40-foot screen in digital format, the series of clips are skillfully presented along with the live music, which is breathtaking.

A number of composers have, over the years, woven symphonic magic with their original compositions, starting with Alexander Courage's original title theme to Michael Giacchino's music for the reboot movies, produced by J.J. Abrams. Heavyweights like James Horner, Cliff Eidelman, Leonard Rosenman, Dennis McCarthy and Academy Award winner Jerry Goldsmith are all represented in a glorious tribute. Even Ron Jones' Opening theme from "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" (A 1997 video game) is here, as well.

The concept was originated by Brady Beaubein, who co-founded CineConcerts, a company who partners with concert halls around the world with the purpose of presenting classic films accompanied by a live orchestra, rather than just the soundtrack. The "Star Trek" franchise is certainly ripe for this kind of treatment, especially approaching the 50th anniversary of the debut of the original concept series. If you're a fan of the show, or even just a fan of symphonic music, this is a journey worth taking.

"Star Trek The Ultimate Voyage" was presented on Feb. 14 at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), 220 Weybosset Street, Providence, RI 02903. For information or tickets, call 401-421-2997 or visit www.ppacri.org.
