They're Baaack: Ex-Gays to Return to DC for 'Safe Exit Summit' in Oct.

Bobby McGuire READ TIME: 3 MIN.

You can't fault the ex-gays for not trying.

On October 3 and 4, ex-gays and the people who like to keep them that way will once again make their yearly pilgrimage to the nation's capital for the "Safe Exit Summit." The event marks a re-brand of what was formerly called "The Ex-Gay Awareness Conference," which was part of "Ex-Gay Awareness Month" in September 2013, but moved to October in 2014.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. If you don't succeed a second time, one solution is to re-brand.

Presented by ex-gay advocacy groups Parents and Friend of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX), Voice of the Voiceless (VoV) and Equality and Justice for All, the "Safe Exit Summit" is a further scaled down version of its predecessors. Gone is the dinner and awards ceremony, along with appearances by hate mouthpieces Sandy Rios, Mat Staver and Alan Keyes, who appeared at the event in previous years. This year will showcase a lean (but just as mean) version as the ones produced in 2013 and 2014.

As in past years, participants will be encouraged to lobby their representatives in Congress on behalf of individuals that have left homosexuality and families struggling with sexual orientation and gender identity conflicts. This will go on all-day Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Friday evening's festivities will include a performance by international worship leader Dennis Jernigan, who will will share his music in worship followed by a screening of the new film "Such Were Some of You." The term "new film" is being used loosely here since the 2-hour documentary that, according to press notes features "scholars, ministers and dozens of testimonies of former homosexuals telling the story of how Jesus Christ can transform anyone with this struggle who comes to Him in repentance and faith," was released in 2014 and has been available on DVD for over a year.

Saturday's events (which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), will include a luncheon and conference that will include a panel discussion with parents and friends of ex-gays and gays, led by PFOX Executive Director Regina Griggs.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Southern Poverty Law Center designated anti-gay hate groups American Family Association, Family Research Council and the Liberty Counsel.

As in past years, the location of the event is shrouded in mystery. Only after paying a $125 registration fee will participants find out where in the Washington, D.C. area all the fun will take place.

On the event registration form, PFOX placed the following disclaimer:

PFOXrequires attendees to sign and adhere to certain standards of conduct, and is not responsible for the individual conduct of attendees. We reserve the right to refuse any person to register or attend for any or no reason at our sole discretion, and disruptive conduct will be grounds for removal without a refund. Attendee agrees to uphold the principles and beliefs ofParents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays-- that we support the ex-gay community; ex-gay rights, and provide hope to those with unwanted same-sex attractions and gender confusion that change is possible. No cell phones, recording devices or photos may be used or taken during the event. I agree to the above conditions.
