Are Kirk Cameron's Views on Gay Marriage Experiencing Growing Pains?

Former teen heartthrob, Kirk Cameron, has made a name for himself in the past few years as a mouthpiece for the religious right who vehemently stood against same-sex marriage, once saying it was "detrimental and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization." But as the Daily Beast reports, Cameron's views may be evolving.

The former actor gave an interview earlier this month with Alabama-based newspaper AL.com and refused to condemn same-sex marriage, saying Christians should look within instead of blaming others for the "decay" of traditional values.

"I think the greatest threat to marriage is not other people's definition of marriage," he said. "The church isn't taking God's definition of marriage seriously. It's not other people sabotaging marriage that's the problem."

Instead of talking about the negative impacts he believes gay marriage may have on the rest of society, Cameron suggested that Christians may be responsible for today's issues.

"When people get too focused on redefining marriage, you're distracted from the bigger problem-fornicators and adulterers..." he told the newspaper. "If the people sitting in the pews are fornicators and adulterers, the church will destroy marriages much more quickly than those outside the church. When God's people mock marriage, God doesn't take that lightly."

As the Daily Beast notes, Cameron's comments isn't a huge shift for the ultra-Christian but it does show a big leap from his past views.

"Rather than blaming gay people for the decline in civilization, Cameron is demanding Christians hold themselves to a higher standard," the Daily Beast writes.

Back in 2012, the former "Growing Pains" star appeared on an episode of CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" and said: "Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either."

Shortly after his comments were made, actress Tracey Gold, who co-starred with Cameron on "Growing Pains," took to Twitter and wrote: "I am a strong supporter of the #LGBT Community, and I believe in equal rights for all. #NOH8 #LOVE."

Cameron's comments sparked a hilarious Funny or Die video, titled "CCOKCS" - a parody public service announcement. CCOKCS, or Child Celebs Opposing Kirk Cameron," features a number of child stars standing up against the anti-gay actor.
