INDIANAPOLIS - A new group of House lawmakers will hear testimony on a proposed gay marriage ban, as part of a move designed to advance the measure in the House.

House Speaker Brian Bosma announced Tuesday that he was moving the proposed ban and a companion measure to the House Elections and Apportionment Committee at the request of Republican lawmakers who want to vote on the issue. The measure stalled in the House Judiciary Committee last week amid concerns from a handful of Republican committee members.

The House elections committee is scheduled to consider the measure Wednesday afternoon.

The Indiana General Assembly approved the constitutional amendment with broad bipartisan majorities in 2011. But a shift in public attitudes combined with a strong campaign by amendment opponents has spurred apprehension among many lawmakers.
