'Euphoria' Star Barbie Ferreira Returns with New Drag King Dramedy
One of "Euphoria's" fan-favorite characters is heading to the big screen in an upcoming drag king dramedy.
As reported by Gay Community News, Barbie Ferreira is set to star alongside fellow queer actor Kiersey Clemons in "The Young King," a directorial debut from Larin Sullivan, who also wrote the story.
The film, set in Las Vegas during the 1990s, will follow Clemons as Jules, an aspiring drag performer who travels to the city to reconnect with her estranged father and debut at the largest U.S. drag king revue. However, Jules' gambling-addicted dad, played by Michael Shannon, "is less than excited to see his daughter 'Julia' presenting as masculine, wearing suits, and chasing after Ronnie (Barbie Ferreira), a no-nonsense dancer," according to the synopsis.
Not only a queer-centric tale, the filmmakers say that this will be the first feature film with a drag king protagonist. As a "fresh twist on classic Vegas stories that have defined 20th-century masculinity," the filmmakers said viewers can expect drag numbers, as well as emotional familial scenes in this "sexy, heartfelt journey."
Setting the mood of the film will reportedly be a soundtrack from executive music producer Justin Tranter, who has previously written for Lady Gaga and Britney Spears.
David Garrett, CEO at Mister Smith Entertainment, said the company is "delighted" to shine a "light on the drag king scene which has rarely, if ever, been explored on the big screen."
The film is expected to begin production this year.
