Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is responding to comedian Chelsea Handler, who fired off a tweet suggesting the lawmaker come out as gay on National Coming Out Day last week.

In her Oct. 11 tweet, Handler wrote: "If you're wondering why Republicans took a sick day today, it's probably because it's #NationalComingOutDay. Looking at you @LindseyGrahamSC."

Though Graham didn't respond via Twitter, TMZ caught up with the politician Friday while he was at Reagan National Airport in South Carolina. A reporter asked him to comment on Handler's tweet.

"It's a free country, you can say what you want to say, I don't care," he said. "I don't think much about what she says at all. If she wants to live her life that way, it's up to her."

"To the extent that it matters, I'm not gay," Graham added. "Belittling people is not as funny as it used to be, and that's a good thing."
