It could be considered a shame that "Sonic the Hedgehog" will remain notorious for its disastrous initial marketing campaign, but this is a film that should be thankful it will even be remembered at all. When the movie's original trailer debuted, the world was introduced to a Cronenbergian blue monstrosity, and the internet immediately unsheathed its hatchets.

The studio actually took note, withdrawing their first trailer and taking the time to fully redesign the classic SEGA character's look. The result is something far more generic and less interesting, as is the film itself. It's a work that's as forgettable as playing the eponymous arcade game on Quaaludes, and parents will wish they were under the influence when their kids inevitably drag them to this piece of corporate-soaked nostalgia bullshit.

It's not worth even explaining the plot, as you could dissect it from countless other mediocre action-adventure tales and wind up with the same results. It's the type of screenplay where every story beat merely feels like an echo - a setup (Sonic, living on Earth, finally makes himself known by releasing a massive electrical discharge that causes a widespread rolling blackout), a villain (Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik, who's on the case with an ulterior motive to capture Sonic's unlimited energy), and a loyal sidekick (James Marsden, who hopefully, after "Hop," doesn't get typecast as the straight-laced buddy of weird-looking CGI characters).

Jim Carrey stands as the film's only redeeming factor, but even his fuck-it-all, let's-have-fun-with-it approach to the material is crippled by the content. Carrey's rubber-faced antics in movies like "The Mask" and "Liar Liar" is quite welcome in "Sonic the Hedgehog," but Robotnik is penned to be such an insufferable prick to every character around him that his personality becomes aggressively repellant.

Throughout the film's course there are some stupid detours, lazy slapstick, unwarranted emotional manipulation, bodily humor jokes and anything else that might resemble a hammer to the brainstem. Quite simply, I wish this movie never existed, and I wish I had never seen it, but it's so unbelievably forgettable that I may as well have not seen it at all. Sonic the who?
