UK Olympic Diver Tom Daley to Star in Doc About Surrogacy

Tuesday Aug 7, 2018

British Olympic diver Tom Daley and his husband, Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, recently had a baby via surrogacy and now the athlete is taking his experience to the small screen.

Deadline is reporting Daley will present a documentary about surrogacy for BBC One called "Surrogacy." Having a child through surrogacy, Daley will explore the modern phenomenon. In the doc, the diver will explore how the process actually works in the U.K., how much it costs and the legal obstacles surrounding surrogacy.

Daley will also travel to California where commercial surrogacy, which includes contracts between surrogates and people looking to become parents, is less of a taboo. He'll also be traveling to some European countries where the practice is illegal.

Deadline also writes of the doc:

Daley wants to find out why some women are prepared to become surrogates. He wants to explore the extraordinary relationships that develop between those wanting to become parents and their surrogates. He wants to meet the people who oppose surrogacy, asking why they want to stop people like him and Lance having a child via a surrogate. And, with commercial surrogacy currently illegal in the UK, he'll meet those who want to change the country's laws.

Throughout his journey Tom will question whether the American or British system works best and whether surrogacy in the UK needs updating in any way.

"Surrogacy is one of the most complex issues in modern society and the laws which govern it are radically different across the world," Tom McDonald, head of commissioning at BBC, said. "As new fathers through surrogacy, Tom and Lance are both committed to exploring all of the nuances around this very emotive subject. I'm thrilled that Tom is going to be our guide in this deeply personal and intelligent film."

Daley and Black tied the knot in May 2017 and revealed in February 2018 they were expecting a baby. They also opened up about negative criticism choosing surrogacy. The couple recently shared photos of their son, Robert Ray Black-Daley.

Deadline also reports the doc will be a single film and will air sometime next year.
