Our Daily Bread

The Long Island City-based wholesale bakery Pain D'Avignon recently opened its first retail location at the Essex Street Market on the Lower East Side. For years, New Yorkers have sampled Pain D'Avignon's carefully crafted breads and pastries all over town, from Eleven Madison Park and Dean & Deluca to the Mandarin Oriental and Momofuku Ssäm Bar. Now our daily breads-ranging from croissants and brioche to miraculous loaves and cranberry pecan rolls-are available in one place for homebound glory.

Uliks Fehmiu, Bane Stamenkovic and Teofil Zurovac opened Pain D'Avignon's Long Island City wholesale bakery in 2000. Fehmiu says, "We grew up in cities where every neighborhood had a bakery that would make freshly baked bread. There were also markets where on a daily basis we would buy cheese, meat and produce from local farmers and vendors. Opening our store in the Essex Street Market is a small step toward recreating those memories."

We hope that Pain D'Avignon will not only continue to rise, but shine as well.
