Did Jodie Come Out?

Receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Career Achievement Award, Jodie Foster publicly acknowledged one of Hollywood's least best-kept secrets.

"I'm just going to put it out there, loud and proud... I am, uh, single."

Well, she sort-of acknowledged that she's gay, though she never uttered the word.

"I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago in the stone age," she said.

The actress was referring coming out to those in her private life. She acknowledged that it has never been said publicly before.

Then she ranted on about her privacy.

"Privacy - maybe someday in the future we'll look back and realize how beautiful it once was," she said.

The New York Times put it this way: "Ms. Foster, long reticent about her personal life, gave a brilliant, somewhat incomprehensible soliloquy that was almost a coming-out speech, but then veered away. (It was like Garbo talks, then Garbo is garbled.) "

Instead of directly acknowledging that she is gay, the actress, who has spent her entire life in the public eye, used the occasion to deride the reality-show consciousness that has become more and more obtrusive.

"I have given everything up there from the time I was three years old," she said. "That is reality enough."

"She did thank her ex-partner and co-parent, Cydney Bernard," the LA Times reported, "and suggested that she was embarking on Act 2 of her career. In some ways it sounded like a retirement speech. She seemed to say that, from now on, she will only take projects that tap into her creativity."

"I’ve had a weird career, and I get a lot of grief for it," she told Deadline Hollywood in an interview published earlier in the day. "What I choose is just really personal, especially as a director. I can’t just go, ’I like scuba diving, so let’s do a scuba diving movie.’ It has to be something I would die for. And because it’s the story of your life, there are the popular parts and the parts nobody likes and the parts people don’t understand. But I have to make those movies, too."

In 2007 Foster first acknowledged her long-time business partner Bernard when she was accepting an award at a Women in Entertainment breakfast. She thanked her "beautiful Cydney... who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss."

According London’s Daily Mall, "the couple met on the set of the film "Sommersby" in 1993 and are raising two sons, Charles, nine, and Kit, six, at their Malibu home."

Her sons were present at the Globes, sitting with her friend and collaborator Mel Gibson.

"Although she gave birth to both boys," the Mall reported, "Miss Foster has never revealed the identity of the father or the circumstances of their conception.

"As with most questions about her personal life, the actress has refused to comment on gossip that the father was an old university friend from Yale, who is also gay."
